Rope Access

Commercial climbing, defined as the practice of abseiling or ascending with the use of ropework to enhance workflow effectiveness.

I Just had my first week of being a rope access window cleaner in the Chicago-land area. It was physically exhausting considering I have a 2 hour commute by biking to the CTA train system and window washing is no joke on the body too. My boss kept exclaiming to my co-workers that I have rock climbing experience; to note, rock climbing experience doesn't matter in the slightest bit here since anchor building is typically simplified, and unless you bolt routes, working in a floating 3d space is tough, straining, and feels unintuitive at first. Here's some other aspects to talk about

Equipment Difference

rack descender

Well first off, everythings static and typically large in diameter. This is the case because it is mechanically inefficient for using ascenders on dynamic ropes as well as the no fall complacency in place. Tiny Grigri's are replaced with bulky Petzl cammed descenders or a funny steel rack system. Comfy lightweight big wall bosuns are replaced with wood boards. Top rope masterpoint where your fall arresting device is locked onto the other strand like rope solo setups. Rope protection can range from the same slim cordura wraps you have at the crag to full blown metal side skirts that drape over the edge of the building. Full body harnesses adorned with cobra buckles rated for 24KN (Matthew Williams should have made one, maybe it's out there somewhere). And for me, a bucket, brush, and squeegee

Workflow & Technique

If you're interested in a position this is practically gonna be the workflow for almost every residential building below 20 stories. Go to the roof. Unravel your rope. Find 2 anchor points and tie into with figure 8's or alpine butterflies, maybe add a directional if you can't clip into the anchors with biners. Rope over your spot. Prep bucket, lower it. Connect descender+bosun to the main line, lower it. Backup device on bucket strand. Shimmy into bosun. Get your bucket and organize. Wash windows. Suction cup to combat physics. And if your co-workers aren't around, people watch for a bit.
